'Columbus' joined the station in the Fall of 1971, initially for nights. Before leaving the station for WLS in 1975, he would also do middays, then mornings. His mellow demeanor heard here on New Year's Day 1972 might be attributable to the prior evening's celebration. He would go on to become a voice-over talent in great demand for national spots.

Evidently the person taping this show missed some songs but inserted them in the correct sequence from a later airing of the special. Toward the end of the countdown 'Alexander Goodfellow' can be heard. A late night fixture of the station, he was also attending the University of Maryland while working at the station. Today he is retired and better known as Charley Lake, formerly, Program Director for WMGK in Philadelphia.

 

 

Another voice inserted into the end of the countdown is part-timer Gary Albert Schaeffer's. He was serving at nearby Andrews Air Force Base at the time of this show. Today, Bill Stedman is retired, formerly Program Director of WCSX in Detroit.

Other things to listen for:

- A spot produced by WPGC Program Director and PM drive guy 'big Wilson' for 'Jesus Christ, Superstar'.

- Several 1971 news recaps throughout the countdown.

- General Manager, Bob Howard's voice as 'Mr. Sound Off' on several listener 'Sound Offs'.

- The AM sign-off & Columbus' urging of listeners to tune over to the FM. The FM was 100% fully simulcast with the AM's daytime hours of operation.
