Dedicated in memory
of Jim
Collins
Gary
Albert Schaefer (aka 'GAS') worked part time at WPGC in 1971-72
while in the Air Force where he made films for the military. Today,
he is retired in
Miami.
Good
Guy Gary writes:
My
good friend in high school - Bill Schaefer - was the inspiration
for the name, Gary Albert Schaefer (G.A.S. in the PM on the AM),
first used at WGOW, Chattanooga in '70. Name came back at 'PGC.
I
was drafted out of WIRL / Peoria, did basic training at Ft. Knox
/ KY and was assigned to the medical TV unit at Walter Reed Army
Medical Center / DC. They figured a radio guy was close enough
to TV for gov't work. Did training videos that were distributed
around the world on the first generation of pro- video cassettes
and worked part time at WPGC in '71-'72.
After WPGC, I went to WGRQ, Buffalo, converting WGR-FM from an
automated Drake "Solid Gold" affiliate to live Top 40
on FM 12/31/72. JJ Jordan was the PD and a rookie seller destined
to be a major owner / operator named John Hayes was on staff.
...btw, a young Ben Homel (spelling?) split his time between 'GRQ
and 'GR-AM, using the air names Chuck Stevens and Randy Michaels...
yup, same guy. Coupla zillionaires-to-be came out of that era
in Buffalo.
Other stints followed at Y-100, Miami / Ft. Lauderdale, WRNO,
New Orleans, Zeta 4 (WINZ-FM), Miami, WKQX, Chicago, WLW, Cincinnati,
WHK, Cleveland, KNEW / KSAN, San Francisco / Oakland, Majic 102.7
(WMXJ), Ft. Lauderdale / Miami, KEZR, San Jose, (Feb '94) Oldies
104.3 WOMC, Detroit and, 94.7 WCSX,
Detroit.
Best
/ worst story while at WPGC is while covering an all-night Sat.
nite/Sun a.m. shift, I fell asleep during The Lutheran
Hour. "Side 1" continued to click in the dead groove
until Todd Reynolds
arrived early for the 6a-12n shift and woke me up. Wasn't I proud!
