Dedicated in memory of Jim Collins

Lisa joined the station for 10p - 2a in 1981 from WCAO in Baltimore, replacing the departing Dana Stephens who went to work for bigger (union) bucks at WKYS.

She later did air work at B104 in Baltimore before returning to her home in Sacramento. Today, Lisa is busy raising her kids in Nashville.

Lisa writes:

Hi there! My Dad googled me a while back (after going through the porn star, Lisa Kay (sorry guys, not me), and found me on your site!! What a thrill!

I was hired by Steve Kingston from WCAO in August of 1981 and was fired by Jerry Steele in Sept. of 1982. I guess I was making "union buck" scale wages (coming from a union shop) and First Media didn't want to pay that anymore.

I was the first female who was on the air before midnight (at age 23) and even filled in for Don Geronimo (6-10pm) when he was on vacation. The General Manager didn't care for this "girl" on the air, but Kingston was very supportive until he left.

Max Wolf did the overnights at the time I was there. I was very proud to work with such an incredible air staff. Elliott & Woodside with Loo Katz, Dave Foxx, Waylon Richards, Don Geronimo, Max Wolf and later, Joe Theismann, Bruce Kelly, and JJ McKay. Back then, being the only female on staff had it challenges, but I didn't want to be treated any differently and didn't mind being teased as the "guy with the bumps on his chest"!

That was the only time in my 25 year radio career that I was fired and I went on to pioneer a lot of "female firsts" in the business. After my marriage to Marty Bass failed, I went home to Sacramento, CA and did a ten year stint as morning show host (not side kick) at KRAK / KNCI-FM then left after I re-married to move to Nashville, TN. I worked a little at WSM-FM doing mornings then afternoons before becoming pregnant with my second child (yes, you can get pregnant in your 40's!). I retired from radio in January 2001 and now stay at home raising my boys, ages 13 and 4.

Joe Lehan / WWZZ - Washington, DC writes:

The photo above is from June 1982, in the Greenbelt main air studio. A couple of years or so after this photo was taken Lisa married Marty Bass of WJZ-TV, Baltimore (weatherman). To my knowledge the marriage lasted maybe a year before they split and she left town.

During the time I knew Lisa she was always warm and outgoing. I never worked at WPGC but grew up listening to it. I worked with Dave Kellogg and Jack Alix at WXTR and even engineered a good portion of the "Big Daddies Weekend" that included a lot of the sound bites you feature on this site. Thanks for the great tribute to a great radio station!
