Dedicated in memory
of Jim
Collins
Dan
Steele did nights at WPGC in 1973-75.
Dan
Steele writes:
Before
WPGC, I was doing all nights at WKBO in Harrisburg, PA and
a guy who was working 8-12 at our competition got a job doing
swing shift at CKLW.
I thought if he could land a big job maybe I could too so
I sent tapes to every big station I could think of and Harv
Moore hired me at WPGC.
I was
fortunate to work at a great station with a talented staff
but after 2 1/2 years in the Nations Capital I knew that there
were better places to raise a family. About the same time
WKBO had an opening for a Program Director and I thought it
would be a good oportunity to learn management so I returned
to the market that I was already familiar with and for the
most part have been here ever since.
Dan
Mason hired me to be his Program Director at KTSA / San
Antonio in 1979 but I only stayed for about 3 months because
it was right after the Three Mile Island nuke plant accident
and I was unable to sell my house here. My wife was pregnant,
and we decided not to move her half way across the country,
so I moved back to Harrisburg and have been in the market
ever since.
WHBO
BIG 92.7 switched from Oldies to WSJW Smooth Jazz 92.7. Most
of the on air people were let go then, I stayed on till 3/31/04
helping in the transition and was let go in a cost cutting move.
It's radio!
I came out of retirement to accept the position of Station Manager of Holy Family Radio 720 WHYF / Shiremanstown, PA, a non-profit daytimer that features the EWTN Global Catholic Network, but have since retired again after suffering a stroke.
Dan
Steele did mornings & was Program Director
at WHBO / Harrisburg, PA until a format change.

On the Diplomat Tickets:
It's
been over 30 years so the details of the "Ticket"
story are a little blurry in my mind. I do remember ripping
up tickets and leaving them at Potter's door but I think it
was 5 tickets for Glenn and a few of his friends. Had it been
50 for a station promotion I would not have destroyed them,
and I did not resign because of the money issue. It was just
a timing thing. I had an opportunity to learn management and
do mornings in a decent market and took it.
This
site documents what a great station WPGC was back then and I
was fortunate to be a small part of it, but WKBO became a damn
good station too. In fact many will tell you sounded like a
major market station that happened to be in a medium market.
Keith
MacDonald writes:
It seems the General
Manager, Glenn Potter (who's main claim
to fame was being the college room mate of one of the owners)
wanted a block of 50 tickets for an upcoming Diplomats (Washington's
original Soccer team) game. Dan Steele was the booth announcer
for the Dips games, so Glenn asked Dan to get him the tickets,
for free of course. Well Dan did it. But before he had a chance
to deliver them, the ratings came out and Dan was #1 again,
beating his chief rival Brother Love at WRC.
So Dan took the opportunity to ask for a raise. Mr. Potter's
response was to tell Dan if he wanted more money, go find another
job. That night Dan tore up the Dips tickets into little pieces
and put them in a pile in front of Potter's door.
