Dedicated in memory
of Jim

Ron
Lewis did weekends during the Spring of 1978 while he was working
at WYRE
in
Annapolis. In recent years, Ron was the President of Boomer Radio on the Internet.
Sad news has arrived of the passing of WPGC's Ron Lewis. Ron did weekend overnights at WPGC in the Spring of 1978, while he was doing middays at WYRE in Annapolis. Hear a WPGC aircheck of Ron in action from 03/12/78 during the height of Disco mania.
Like a lot of guys in the biz, he got started in high school then college radio at Temple University. After working for a while in Miami, he relocated to DC where he would make stops at numerous stations of significance in and around the Nation's Capital.
At WYRE, he worked with PD and future WPGC Program Director, Steve Kingston. The strain of balancing middays there with an overnight weekend gig was just too much for him.
Soon afterwards, future WPGC Promotions Director, and WWDC Program Director, Loo Katz hired him for middays at 1260.
By the early '80's, WJMD in Bethesda dropped out of the uphill battle for Beautiful Music with WGAY. Transitioning into Soft AC, he wound up doing Mornings there before they rebranded as 'W-Lite'.
Among the more interesting stops he made was during the mid '80's as Program Director of the All-Comedy format at WJOK in Gaithersburg. At only 1,000 watts, the former WHMC had signal coverage issues (unless you happened to live in Montgomery Village)! The laughing stopped when the experiment could not be sustained financially.
In a bitter irony, that same outcome was realized a few years later when Ron became President of the late, Boomer Radio on the Internet. Catering to those of a certain generation (think, 'Baby Boomers'), the Classic Hits format survived in a sea of sound-alike competitors all hoping to bite off a sizeable piece of the pie. Alas, by 2018 the venture signed off for good. Read their farewell message.
Ron's other interests included Ham Radio. In fact, over the years he made contact with other Ham operators in over 100 different countries.
His lifelong passion was for animals however with a dog or cat nearby throughout his life. His wife, Janet requests that donations in his memory be made to an Animal Shelter of your choosing in lieu of flowers. Read Ron's full biography.
Ron suffered from bronchitis for which he did not receive treatment. Sadly, the virus affected his heart and he passed away of a heart attack at age 71 peacefully on 12/18/23. View his Facebook page.
Ron was a true radio guy and is missed by all. Relive his memory once more with another WPGC aircheck from 05/14/78.
