Dedicated in memory

Collins
Hear Tim Kelly count down songs #100 - #91 of the WPGC Top 100 of 1976:
Hear Big Ron O'Brien count down songs #90 - #15 of the WPGC Top 100 of 1976:
Hear Dino Del Gallo count down songs #14 - #1 of the WPGC Top 100 of 1976:
(Special
thanks to Walt Bailey for the audio above)
Heard
here the morning after New Year's Eve on 1/1/77, Tim
Kelly joined the station from WCFL in Chicago in 1976 several
months after Columbus
left for the Production Director gig at WLS
Chicago. His tenure at WPGC lasted until May of 1977 when all
striking air personnel on the station were replaced with non-unionized
talent. Tim would go onto to do mornings in LA on 'The Beat',
host a show on KFI with his wife Evelyn
(who was a Money
Girl at WPGC when Tim worked there), and became one of the
founders of Premiere Radio.
'Big' Ron O'Brien
ruled the night time air waves at WPGC during 1976-77, a period
after the demise of cross town competitor WRC
the year before. Broadcasting in fine tradition every evening
from the 'Bladensburg Space Needle' (the studios were located
at the time in Bladensburg, Maryland), he stayed until the aforementioned
strike in '77. He later would go on to WNBC,
New York, KIIS-FM
in LA and many other legends in radioland. Big Ron passed away
in
Dino Del Gallo
was back at the station again, once more doing late nights. He
can be heard wrapping up the countdown. Another casualty of the
strike just five months after this broadcast, Dino went on to
do mornings at WMZQ
in Washington during the mid '80's.
Other
things to listen for:
- Several listener 'Sound
Offs' by News
Guy, Bob
Raleigh (Bill Miller, also deposed by the strike) on the Redskins
season, Christmas season gripes and people opening car doors into
traffic.
- A 1976 promotions recap promo
by Tim Kelly
& a Top Ten LPs giveaway promo
by afternoon guy & Program
Director, Jim
Collins (for whom this site is dedicated).
- An agency spot
for a new movie at the time, 'A Star Is Born'.
