Dedicated in memory
of Jim
Collins
Chart
Notes: The Beatles
take the triple crown at WPGC with 'I Want To Hold Your Hand',
'She Loves You' and 'Please, Please Me'
at #1, #2 & #3 respectively.
Remarkably, all three singles are on different labels with the
songs appearing on Capitol, Swan and Vee-Jay respectively
(although
Capitol would later acquire the rights to the latter two).
Those three songs would go on to end the year as the #1, #2 &
#4 songs on the WPGC
Top 100 of 1964.
'I
Want To Hold Your Hand' stays put in the #1 position at Milt
Grant's Network,
WWDC, WEAM
and WINX
but ties for #1 at WEEL.
Bucking the trend, and in an ironic twist of fate, Elvis',
'Kissin' Cousins' lands at #1 at WDON.
Meanwhile,
'She
Loves You', is a solid #2 at Milt
Grant's Network
and WWDC, #5 at WINX,
#6
at WEAM,
is tied for #1 at WEEL
but is missing from the Top Ten at WDON,
the same station that is playing as a 'Predicted Hit' an
apparent novelty record about the Beatles,
appropriately entitled, 'The Beatle' by The Buddies.
In
what could only be considered a blatant rip-off of major proportions,
the song has absolutely no connection with the Fab
Four whatsoever other than the fact it is released by
Swan Records, the same label that 'She Loves You'
appears on. Whatsmore, the instrumental song has nothing to do
with the 'Mersey Beat' sound in the U.K., and sounds more
like a garage surf band with heavy Bo Diddly influences.
Not surprisingly, it fails to chart nationally in the U.S.
And
in an amusing coincidence, the latest song by the Marvelettes,
'He's A Good Guy' is at #9 on WUST and #10 at WDON
but does not appear in the Top Ten at 'Good Guys Radio',
WPGC!
