Dedicated in memory
of Jim
Collins
Jeanne
Oates became General
Manager in late 1982 when Charles
Giddens left WPGC for station ownership. During her tenure,
she replaced Program
Director, Jerry Steele
with veteran programmer, Al Casey
who tried to reposition the station closer to its former, hipper
self.
Management
overruled him however and during her watch the station suffered
its most humiliating days culminating in the pathetic change of
the FM into 'Classy 95' (aka, 'Trashy 95'). If anyone
knows of her whereabouts today, please email
the webmaster.
Roddy
Freeman writes:
When
I was at my first advertising job in the media department of W.B.
Doner & Company in Baltimore in the mid-seventies, Jeanne
Oates was the agency's sales rep from WJZ-TV in Baltimore. In
those days, she had a great reputation and was then hired by TeleRep
in Philadelphia. As a matter of fact, she left Baltimore for Philly
in 1979 around the same week I left for New York.
Several
years later, she was lured back to DC by WDCA-TV, which apparently
gave her the world. Then of course came her stint with WPGC and
of course (excuse me while I vomit,) WCLY. She then went down
to Florida to run a radio station.
I
returned to Baltimore and to W.B. Doner in 1988. The last time
I saw Jeanne, she was sales manager at WGMS. She came into the
agency to give us a presentation along with Catherine Malloy,
the General Manager. Shortly after that, she called my boss and
told him that Malloy had fired her. (Malloy fired everybody.)
If I recall, Jeanne had gotten a sales job with some hard-to-sell
unconventional advertising vehicle. That's the last I ever heard
of her. She was always very nice but a little on the loony side.
