President Nixon's Press Secretary responds to a Sound Off (but doesn't win $30).

January 28, 1974

Dear Mr. Howard:

Last week your "Sound Off' program aired a letter from a listener who did not complain about the President traveling to California by commercial aircraft but did resent what the listener believed to be fact: that a government airplane followed the commercial airliner and that the government airplane carried the President's dog.

Let me assure you and your many listeners that this information is incorrect.

No government airplane followed the United plane that took the President and his family to California. Indeed, no government plane flew to California on Presidential business during his stay at San Clemente.

The President did take his Irish Setter, King Timahoe, to California but King Timahoe rode on the United airliner in the baggage compartment.

I hope this clarifies the matter.
